Fixed interest rate locks in a specific interest rate for a term ranging from 1 year to 10 years. 

Fixed rate loan provides interest rate and repayment certainty but less flexibility. The main feature of a fixed rate loan is it requires the borrower to stay in the entire fixed rate term, otherwise a penalty, ie break cost, may apply. The other limitation is the maximum additional repayment is allowed. Most fixed rate loans don't allow redrawal.

If you need security that your rate is fixed if general interest rates rise, you should consider fixed rates. But because it is less flexible, you need to consider if it is suitable for you. If you plan to sell the property in near future or if you wish to redraw the additional repayments you have made to the loan, fixed rate loan may not be suitable for you.
